Being Alive is an Art Form - Create Your Masterpiece!!

SoulStrolling with Claude Monet - 2014 (click)

by Kayce Stevens Hughlett

Being alive is an art form. As individuals we get to choose whether we are a Mona Lisa, Andy Warhol ‘Marilyn,’ serene landscape or something utterly delicious of our own making. Perhaps you’re a cupcake or tiramisu. A couture-inspired chic or hobo hipster. You get the picture, right?

Our life is a canvas and we are the creators.

In the past several months, I’ve discovered a group of amazing fempreneurs (the creation of Sherill Calhoun) who are rocking the world with their creative business approaches. They’ve got me thinking about what my brand and business look like and how I want to share it with the world.

At Live it to Give it, I believe we are created to live our lives to the fullest. It’s our choice to decide what that looks like. One commonality that I’ve discovered, however, is that the natural response to living our best life is the desire to share and give back to others. Much like an artist feels called to create a vision of art, I am prompted to share inspired ways of being in the world.

I’ve been pondering the intersection of art and business and decided to bring this notion to a few of my new playmates, so I posed the following:

Being alive and doing business are art forms… Each uniquely beautiful. What creation or masterpiece would you select to represent your business and why?

Blaze Lazarony of Blaze A Brilliant Path is a super strategist and fire-starter who happens to be married to her own masterpiece painter. This is what she had to say:

“My husband, David Lazarony, is an incredible portrait, figure, and landscape artist and he painted this masterpiece of me. In it, I’m looking out our upstairs bedroom window onto Monterey Bay and the sandy beach across the street. I grew up with an intense love for the water; especially all things sand and surf. Today I can feel that I am merging the calm and flowing water energy from my past, with the passionate fire and brilliant light of being of service to others in business.

I believe this painting represents me by sharing my curious observer nature, my ability to see the possibilities in business, and most importantly—my passion to create opportunities with and for my clients, by connecting their soul to tangible business strategy by sharing powerful marketing techniques, leadership skills, and teaching positive mindsets to move their business forward at the two-plus year mark.”

Elissa Wolf, the founder of Wolf Recruiting, offered a dreamy artistic approach for her business where she connects talented candidates with business customers seeking to hire.

“I'm thinking a water feature because my business is so fluid & ever changing...and I love water. It would be made with natural elements...stone, foliage of green, moss, and dashes of color. Bird of paradise is one my favorites, and it would be balanced with plants & flowers reflecting gentleness and strength. I'm fond of jewel tones and mixing textures. Whatever size and form it would take would mirror balance and create an inviting atmosphere and energy.”

I can’t help but think of Monet’s fluid and ever changing water lilies when I read Elissa’s description. They are so lovely, just like her!

Thanks so much to Blaze and Elissa for helping me explore art as business form. I’m still pondering my own answer and look forward to sharing other masterpieces with you very soon.

In the meantime, I invite you to ponder this: What creation or masterpiece would you select to represent your life and/or business? Have fun! The perfect answer is the one you select!! I’d love to hear!

This is a beautiful and important article, Kayce! We live in a society that separates art and business unless you're specifically in the business of making art (and then, good luck making money at it!). As you say, life is an art form, so then it follows that everything we do is part of that canvas -- our selves, our friends and family, our spirituality, our fun, our business. I believe it's this integration (alignment) that evolves us to living our highest purpose and vision. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom and others' insights!
