Playing with Prompts ~ #befriend

by Kayce Stevens Hughlett

While pondering today’s prompt, #befriend, I was delighted and not exactly surprised to see that lots of furry friends showed up in my musings. Again, not-so-surprisingly, they showed up beside the theme of my inner magical child. Join me, won’t you for this tiny peek inside the trails (and trials) of my mind.

Come home to yourself. Awaken the muse. Tap into your magical child. You know the one. She makes mud pies and dandelion soup to heal the creatures. Anything is possible for this child of magic. Oh how I long for those days where anything was possible, the days before the reality crash that some things were out of my tiny grasp to heal.

More than 50 years past, I can still see the small kitten laying in the middle of the concrete road, its insides tumbling onto the pavement like canned cherry pie filling. My mother quickly scuttled me away. It was too late. I never have cared for cherry pie, but I’ve forever loved tuxedo kittens.

Kittens have always held a special magic for me, sometimes black magic like the stray who shared disgusting ringworm with me at the beginning of 7th grade or Larry the Wonder Cat who disappeared one night wearing only his tabby-colored coat. His collar turned up in the neighbor’s garden a year later.

I’ve always adored puppy breath, but with kittens I feel their silky fur and know the sting of sharp teeth and claws. More than 7 years after his passing from this world, I still grieve for my faithful golden retriever Curry. I also remember the speckled pup I befriended in kindergarten, trading a bit of my ice cream for a taste of his crunchy kibble.

A few years later, I see Smokey the cat (another disappeared pet) who turned up on the playground at school with one bloodshot eye, the same color as that horrid cherry pie filling. Smokey came home after months away or was it just days? Time is so long and luxurious when you’re seven. I remember finding him outside the chain link fence at school then calling my mom, but I don’t remember what happened to him after that. I guess I haven’t had such great luck with cats until Aslan, of course. But then, he is The King!

To befriend ~ What if I choose to befriend myself like the pups and kittens of my life? Some will die too soon, others will leave in their own way, but it only takes one act of unconditional love to surround your heart for a lifetime. What will I befriend today? What will you?

During the month of March, Sharon Richards and I (the creators of SoulStrolling) are sharing 31 simple words to help you connect and collaborate with your world. (Click here for details and to download the words. No sign up and it’s FREE!)

Ponder the word for the day. Notice what arises in your mind. Free-write. Set a timer for 3 minutes. Make art. Dance it. Snap a photo. Use it as a walking meditation. Slow down. Take your soul for a stroll. Be present. What captures your eye? The ways to play are infinite!!!

Share your findings on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, your blog... Use the hashtag #soulstrolling + the prompt for the day (ex. #befriend) I'd love to know if you're playing!
