“You never know when you're making a memory.”
Rickie Lee Jones
It’s a beautiful morning in Seattle. The sun is shining and there’s a new week spread before us. I see a multitude of choices about how I want or need to spend my day, but I can’t quite settle on anything. I want to write. The garden is calling. There are clothes to wash. Beds to make. Emails to return. I need a walk.
The materials of the day are laid out before me. What will I choose to create?
Being alive is an art form. Each day we get to choose what we will make of it. We work with the materials given and we go in search of our own designs. Palettes change and colors shift, but always we have a choice as to how we will proceed.
Yes, we always have a choice… even when we feel trapped by deadlines and commitments and circumstances beyond our control. Even during those times, we can shift an attitude or vision.
I can pause in my restlessness and say ‘hello’ to you. You can carve out 3 minutes and listen to a song that lifts your spirit. What might shift if you took a moment and smiled at yourself in the mirror or sent a quick note to someone you love?
Just like masterpieces, days are not created in one fell swoop. They evolve moment by moment. Brush stroke by brush stroke. Word by word. Step by step. Memory by memory.
Today, I invite you to pause for one single moment. Allow an expansive breath to fill your lungs. Exhale anything you don’t need. Repeat. Close your eyes and imagine the feeling you want to create for yourself and others. Linger there for another moment or two. Carry on.
I've been having fun with some of my favorite peeps exploring how their lives are represented by art. Check it out here and here. Who knows? You might find your perfect inspiration!

Pausing with morning coffee in hand. I'm on the back porch and thinking of you, one of my favorite people. I have exhaled and the laundry can wait for me to fully enjoy the view and the coffee. Thanks for the reminder that it is okay to do so!
