Musings from a Contemplative Walk
by Kayce Stevens Hughlett
The woman entered into her day, taking her soul for a stroll, and there along the path she was greeted by the majestic Madrona tree. The tree of the mother. It stood beside the walkway, effortlessly peeling back and letting go of its bark. Its outer skin slipping away and its inner tenderness peeking through the layers. The outside dull and dried up, but the inside fresh and new.
“Let go of the old,” whispered the ancient tree. “Let go of what is heavy and burdens your heart.”
Listening with the ears of her soul, she was aware of something shifting. She knew a change had come even though she could not name what it was. Her eyes turned skyward into the stretching branches of the tree. Fresh growth. It seemed out of reach, but she could sense the brilliance in those upper limits.
“Be still and know we’ve got this. Your role is to pay attention. Let go. Travel lightly and remember the old baggage is like my peeling bark. Let it go.”
She walked onward and there under the roots sat an ancient man holding a fish. His hands were folded as if in prayer and the fish appeared to listen intently to what the Wise One had to say,
“You are golden. Do not forget this ever,” said the man through squinting eyes. “See with the eyes of your heart. Know in the depths of your soul. Travel lightly. Carry only what you need and soon the desert will blossom in its fullness. You need do nothing except listen and be.”
Onward she walked with the images and words soothing her weary soul.
Consider taking your soul for a stroll today. Imagine that you need do nothing except listen and be.
