#15 Making a Simple Difference
by Kayce Stevens Hughlett
“Remember always that you have not only the right to be an individual; you have an obligation to be one.” Eleanor Roosevelt
One of my favorite things to ponder is the topic of “small things.” Is there really such a thing as something too small or insignificant? I understand I have the privilege of living in a beautiful part of the country and often travel to other places deemed paradisiacal in nature. People have commented it is easy to enjoy things when you are surrounded by phenomenal beauty and caring friends. True. I also recall dark and challenging moments in these same locales. So what makes the difference?
I believe that if we fulfill our “obligation” as Eleanor suggests, we move right out of ordinary and into extraordinary. This magical movement manifests in a connection that permeates through life’s layers and touches us deep within while spreading outward to others.
One of the most sacred things I recall doing while on holiday one year was to lovingly set the table for those with whom I was going to dine. As I rolled the napkins and silverware and placed the paper plates on the simple table, I considered each person and viewed my gesture as an act of love toward them. While I did not verbally share this with anyone, it was a vision that stayed with me. This seemingly small gesture was sandwiched amidst many other events that could have been viewed as much more extraordinary.
Does setting a table become more sacred in “paradise?” Is there anything that is truly ordinary? Only if we allow it to be so.
As you go about your tasks this holiday season, offer presence and gratitude for each "small" thing.
- Set your table with loving care.
- Bless the recipient as you wrap a gift.
- Send loving kindness to other shoppers at the mall.
- Thank the sun for rising and offer gratitude to the stars and moon.
- Find your own extraordinary in the ordinary.
